so i want to make an outline as i type. something like this:
1. history
1.1 technology
a) it's fun
after a) how do i make it go to 1.2? how do i make it go to "2" after i'm done with the history heading? sorry for the noob question. |

You need three heading styles (like heading1, heading2 and heading3), one for "history", other for "technology" and the last for "it's fun". Then, go to Tools -> Outline Numbering; in the "numbering" tab, put each style in its level (heading1 in level one...) and select for each level the numbering style you want (for "technology", set "show sublevels" to 2)

So, you are talking about numbered list, and not outline numbering? |
