I can do this inOOO1 and checked on a friends computer which uses excel -no trouble.

Tools > Options > Load and Save > Microsoft Office
Or did you already check that ?

Carl,
I have no answers, only a couple of questions. Forgive me if you've already considered and discarded them. I am assuming you're talking about xls files downloaded from somewhere on the net.
Is it only happening to one file?
Is it only happening on one site?
Have you tried a different site?
Perhaps you could paste a URL and someone here could have a go at opening the file(s) - if that is appropriate.
Where I'm heading with this is maybe it is a problem with the file (eg. a URL or HTML or some such in cell A1) and OO is responding by opening it as HTML. Or some smilarly bizarre issue with the site.
I'm currently at work therefore forced to use IE, every xls I can find opens as a spreadsheet in the IE window (or they're zipped). I saved one locally and OO opened it up fine ("Capital Budgeting Analysis" sheet from this page).

Just thought of something else: Have you tried opening the file(s) with OO 1.1.x?

Just as a check I went to the file Dale references with Firefox and it opened automatically in OOo2.0.0 RC_1.

I have no trouble with other downloads and it works fine with ooo1etc. I noticed that in Excel it opened as an xls which I could work on too, but the format was a little more fancy in that the grid lines were not visible so that it looked better as a bank statement. I suspect taht the trigger for Html is in this formatting.

well that is the problem its my bank account, which means I am stuck with the problem. Changing banks or not using OOO2 is too silly.

In case you don't know: Turning grid lines on/off is in Tools>Option, select View tab. I've got a vague idea it might be a setting for individual spreadsheets. So maybe no HTML there.

I see what you mean. Perhaps if you've access to another OOo2 installation you can take a copy of the problem spreadsheet and see if you can reproduce the problem.
This is all obvious stuff. I'm afraid I'm not being much help to you.

I tried ne-nameing the xls as csv and opened in OOO2
and this was the first line:
<TABLE width=600 border=0 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0><TR><TD><strong> Kontonummer xxxxxxx
BTW the csv opened identically in OOO1
To check I opened the unaltered xls in OOO2 and got the HTML version
and in OOO1 I got an easy to use xls

| I am not sure if it has been resolved or not but we are having the same issue. The file in question is actually a HTML file with a .XLS extension. It will open in Excel and in the spreadsheet in OOo1, but in OOo2 it opens in the HTML editor. Is there any way to force it to be opened in the spreadsheet? |

I have some more information on this. The code to make this happen is from Microsoft to export a “data set” readable by Excel. I would guess we will see more of this issue as OOo2 becomes more heavily used.
Carl I don’t think we are anywhere near alone with this issue. |

One of the many things that I like about OpenOffice is that the user is able to make his/her own decisions based on options that are visible in the various menus.
I am not able to deal with the MS "everything is possible ,but you have to be the programmer to know where to look" approach.
This problem shows that not all progress is an improvement!
