I installed OpenOffice several months ago on a Windows 7 computer and it worked great until a few days ago when it just refused to open. Get no response. I uninstalled and reinstalled ... same problem. I note that in the reinstallation that it does not include Win 7, only goes up to XP. Could that be the problem?

Win 7 is not the problem if you have V3.2.1. Try resetting the user profile http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74&t=12426 . The other thing to try is using task manager and terminate any soffice processes that are running. Then reboot and try OOo again. Where did you get your download from? www.openoffice.org is the recommended site.
