I'm trying to open a pdf and edit the file,I'm told I can do this - do I need a plugin?

There is an extension available but it is very limited in what it can do. First it imports into Draw which leaves limited very limited editing possibilities.

You probably are better off using a pdf scanning program to import the document and work from there. Commercially ABBY is able to do this. I'm not sure about opensource software.

Otherwise you could print the document, scan it and run it through an OCR program. Clumsy but as therabi says, the ability to edit pdf is limited. A pdf file was never intended to be edited as it is an end of process document.

Much more convenient is the Free Software "The Gimp". You open the PDF with Gimp, and you obtain a high quality bitmap rendition of your pdf.

There is a utility "pdf2text" that extracts text from a PDF to plain text format.

PDF has never been intended as an editable format.
