| Is it possible to create an alphabetical index where the page numbers hyperlink to the references? I can see how to do it in a table of contents but not in an alphabetical list. |

You mean an alphabetical list of selected words?
Select the word you need in the index, and go to Insert -> indexes and tables -> entry (or use the button Insert index marker in the left toolbar - is not visible by default, do a right click in the toolbar and select Visible buttons). Select Alphabetical index -> insert.
Then, to insert the index: Insert -> indexes and tables -> indexes and tables, and in type, select Alphabetical index |

| Thanks for the answer but what I need is for the page numbers in the generated index to be hyperlinks to the relevant sections in the document. |

| You're right, that does explain how to do it in a ToC but is it possible in an index? The hyperlink button is not available. |

You create a TOC with hyperlinks, then you unlock it and sort it. You have to re-sort any time you update it. It is a very powerful technique.
It would be even better if the TOC had an automatic ability to be sorted alphabetically. |
