Writer doc with default set of .doc resulted in .doc#

Saving a doc in Writer with the default extension set to .doc resulted with the .doc extension but the # sign was added to it the end resulting in it looking like: name-of-doc.doc#
I removed the # thinking it was a typo but was unable to view the doc after saving it.
Q: has this happened to anyone else?, and if so why did it happen and how do you rectify it?
