Hi all. I am very embarrassed that I know so little about Calc, but I own two paint stores and use it to track all of my custom paint formulas (so that if you ever needed more paint, I could make the exact same thing). I have a sheet for each store, and I just hit control+f, type in a search word, and skip through to find all the matches. The problem is, I have done so many custom paint matches now that it is time consuming and inefficient to scan through each one. Not to mention, sometimes I need to compare the matches, so I end up writing them down. What I really need is every row that has a match with the search to be visible at the same time.

So I am thinking that I could add another sheet to my project. On this sheet, I am hoping to have a textbox, a search button, and a small area to display rows (or maybe just the sheet would work). The idea is pretty simple. The user enters a term to search for. When they click the search button some code looks through all the rows and columns of the two sheets, and then any row that contains the search term is displayed.

So.... Is this possible? Done before (im hoping)? How many nights must I stay up trying to learn Basic?

I may be missing something but could you not do this with some simple filtering?

Otherwise buy more oil for the lamps.

I think in the long run you would be better off with a data base.

filtering is okay. but every time i have to click through and manually insert the column heading and manually choose the condition 'contains'. and then manually insert an area to copy the results too. and i have 2 sheets. and believe it or not, that can be alot to ask some of my non computer savy paint store employees to do without messing up the spreadsheet.

but my concept is the same as filtering. a database is even more difficult for me to try to figure out how to make. i believe a few lines of VB could search through the whole project and just display any row that contains those letters.
