In versions to 1.1.2, file\properties\statistics. IIn the new developer version 1.9 M45 there is a further menu tools\wordcount which I imagine will feature in OOo 2.

Probably in version 2. In the meantime you can use this macro:

If you don't know how to deal with a macro there is an sticky explanation at the top of the Snippets forum. |

Look for posts by JohnV or download Andrew Browns's macro from
http://www.ooomacros.org/
they both created easy-to-use macros which you may customize to your own needs |

Certainly no apology necessary. I get to see my "name" in bold print - I'm impressed! |

I have no idea what to do with macros, I'll look for version 2.
And I must say the responsiveness of the open source community to user questions puts Microsoft to shame!!! Thanks all! |

Just a word of warning, Dan. 1.9 (which will become 2) is only a developer snapshot at the moment and not stable enough for everyday use.

Dan,
You will probably find other uses for macros. They may be difficult to write but they are relatively easy to use when someone else provides the code. I have tried to make this as painless as possible with the explanation found here:
http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7995
For macros other than those found in the code snippets section here, take a look at www.ooomacros.org |

I'm a translator and I bill my main client using characters without spaces (his eccentricity, not mine). Will this statistic become available in Writer?
cheers

It looks like it, but not in OOo 2.0 I am afraid. _________________ www.kaaredyret.dk - OpenOffice resources (templates, extensions, tutorials and more) !

Bob,
You can set my macro, referred to above, to do a character count without spaces. Selected text, including spaces, is limited to 64K characters at a time. |

just a thought: spaces come between words, therefore 1000 words need 999 spaces, so characters less spaces and "Bob's your Uncle!" _________________ carl
