|

I was using OOW for everything, and saving my documents in .odf format. However, it started freezing within minutes every time I opened it. I thought an update might help solve the problem, but it actually made it worse; now it freezes within seconds. I don't even have time to check the version number I'm using before it locks up, but I updated just a few days ago so the version is very recent. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit with the most recent critical patches, but not Service Pack 1.
I'll be happy to post any other info needed to diagnose this problem; just let me know what you need. All my documents are saved in .odf so I'm kind of up a creek if I can't get it working again.
Thanks much! |

1. Do a Scandisk on your drive with the "Scan disk surface" and Repair bad sectors" options selected - it's possible there's an "iffy" sector/cluster that OOo is sitting on. Yes, it'll take a long time to run, but you'll have confidence your hard drive's "storage capability" is in good shape.
2. Do a Defrag on your drive after the Scandisk finishes. This will guarantee the file system is in "peak efficiency" mode.
3. Run a "memory (RAM) check" utility (there should be one @ www.sourceforge.net) - it's not beyond the realm of possibility that one of your RAM modules has some locations that are a little "poo" (I type from personal experience here!). Let it run a few cycles and note any "errors" that are reported - that'll tell you which RAM module is suspect.
4. Finally, if the "freezing" is occurring on SPECIFIC DOCUMENTS, try and copy them to another location on your hard drive (or even to an external storage device). If you can, try to open the "relocated" documents - if they still "freeze", it's possible the document(s) is(are) "poo", iin which case you'll have to try and recover them.
That's all I can offer - I hope it helps... _________________ I'm making perfect sense - you're just not keeping up! |

Thank you! I'll give this a shot tonight when I'm not using the computer and post back here with the results.
Can you recommend a specific memory check utility? My search on sourceforge and cnet for "RAM check" and "memory check" utilities came up with lots of results to monitor memory usage but not much in the way of checking memory health. |

Go to http://www.memtest.org/, download the ISO for your CPU, burn it to a CD, and boot from the CD. This is a VERY THOROUGH RAM checker!
If any "memory errors" occur, look at the address(es) of the "erroneous" location to determine which RAM module they are in. First test is to SWAP RAM modules and re-run the utility. If the address(es) CHANGE, then the RAM module is suspect (usual case); if they "stay the same", it's RAM slot problem (motherboard).
For the record: I had a similar problem with "corrupted" OOo files that translated to a bad RAM module. I replaced it and haven't had a problem since.
Hope this helps... _________________ I'm making perfect sense - you're just not keeping up! |
