I'm using Open Office Writer 3.2 on Mint 10 (ubuntu 10).
For the life of me, I can not make a page number field visible in a
header. My goal is to start page numbering on an arbitrary value (offset).
Example: With the cursor in the main body of the document:
------------------------------------------------------
Insert-> Fields-> Other->Variables(tab).
Under 'Type' select 'Set page variable'
Under 'Selection'
Click 'on' in the Offset box and enter 1 less than the desired starting page number.
Click 'Insert'
Under 'Type', again, click on 'Show page variable'
Under 'Format' click on
'As page Style'
Click 'Insert'
Click 'Close'
------------------------------------------------------
and I see a page number at the top of the page.
But if I do the same set of actions in the header I see a small
gray area highlighted in the header, but no number is visible!
NOTE: Text typed into the header is visible.
I can also see by backtracking in Edit->Undo that two
fields were inserted. But it is just not visible.
How can I correct this?

This is turning into a pretty desperate situation. I'm not exagerating.. this about
our livlihood and we can't make this work!

Forget what you have tried and do this.
This assumes that you are working pages that already exist. Go to the page where you want this numbering to start. Put your cursor in the very first paragraph. Do Format > Paragraph > Text Flow tab, in the Breaks section check both boxes and set the page number on the right by the 2nd box.
Click in the header and do Insert > Fields > Page Number.
Note that if you give a physical odd page an even number (or vice versa) then OOo will insert a blank page (visible at File > Page Preview) to enforce its rule that all documents start with a right page that is numbered 1.
For page that don't yet exist go the the bottom of the last page and do Insert > Manual Break > Page Break then select the page style and set the number. |

Thank you very much for your reply JohnV, but unfortunately - this raised a whole
number of other issues and this is going to be a major tutorial for me in how to
manage headers
1)Yes, now there is a blank first page. How can I get rid of that blank page?
2)The header font color is now a dark yellow. How do I change the color?
3)The target format is to have text on the left side of the header and the page number
at the right. If I type in text, the page number is now on a second line on the left and I
can't back it up so it is on the first line of the header on the right.
4)There are now '|' - like characters to the left of the header outside of the header
boundaries and I can't get rid of them.
The header can have only one line.
I appreciate the help and I hope that there is more forthcoming.

"Edit - Changes - Record" to turn off tracking of changes.
"Edit - Changes - Show" to turn off showing the changes, or better: "Edit - Changes - Accept or reject - Accept all" to "accept" all changes and thus remove their special appearance. This will get rid of the yellow font and the | characters in the margin.
Whenever I started to use software, Wordstar, Wordperfect, Latex ... I started reading a good book. I never have been able to just jump into more complex software, and use it right away without spending time to go through the documentation first. The more software you studied, the easier it will become to learn other, similar software.

Open a new document to try this. Insert the Header and immediately look at the horizontal ruler. You should see two tabs.
The one in the center is a center tab which you don't need, click on it and drag it down off the ruler.
The tab on the right is a right alignment tab so tap Tab once and insert the page number field. You can now click on the left side of the header and type what you want without moving the page number.
FWIW, the Header & Footer paragraph styles are the only ones that have just these two tabs.
I hope ftack's suggestion cleared up you other problems. If not, let us know. |

I have a solution - at least of all, on the first document.  I've actually got
20 more to do.
I was advised by the mailing list to upgrade my OO. I first de-installed from ubuntu
using synaptic. Then I downloaded the deb version of 3.3 and installed it.
The method of using the set page variable and show page variable
now works. I had to also uncheck | Code: | Edit->Changes->Record
Edit-Changes-Show |
I am very thankful for the advice that I got here. It will be valuable at any time and
I will be taking notes and bookmarking this link.

I didn't discuss this before but we almost always advise against using Offset. The reason is that your TOC or any other reference to something in the document that returns a page number will return the physical page number and not that set by the offset.
Offset is also available at Insert > Fields > Other > Document tab with Type = Page. This is where most people get in trouble. |

Thank you for the heads up. I don't know if this will be a problem in our case, as
it is likely that documents will be exported as PDF, but I will bear your caveat in mind.
