howdy y'all,

decided to try OOo today and i am having freaky probs.

i entered this ...
=MID(A2;LEN(A2)-4;1)

... in a cell and IT works. shows the correct single character of text from the info in cell a2.

then i put this ...
=MID(A2;3;1)

... in the cell beneath the previous working-just-freaking-fine cell. it shows the formula as literal text. what did i do wrong?

btw, i can do a copy/paste-special/only-formulas from the first [working formula] cell and the formula shows up as a formula - with the expected errors caused by shfted refs to A2.

but when i do a copy/paste-special/formulas-only from the 2nd [non-working formula] cell, there is nothing in the call at all.

so i figure i have SOMEhow managed to tell calc that the strig is NOT a formula.

how did i do that and how do i UNdo it? [*grin*]

help? please?

take care,
lee

Delete the contents of the cell.

Do Format -> Cells

Select the numbers tab.

If it is not Category: Number ; Format : General - set it to that

Repaste the formula into the cell. I'm on WinXP - and I just use ctrl-X,ctrl-C
and ctrl-V for my cut/paste needs.

If you don't wanna see Formula's at all:

Choose Tools - Optons - Spreadsheet - Lay-out.
In tte View-range make sure you didn't mark the Formulas box.

If you did, unmark it.

Click OK.
