| Is it possible to output the results of a query to a text file or spreadsheet instead of using the reports in Base? |

You absolutely can. Reporting with Word or Calc is handy (especially for charts).

Additionally, the oracle Report Builder extension is OK for a lot of reporting. May be worth a look.
