endnote and other bibliographic software

Does ther exist an open source bibliographic program that runs with Openoffice as Endnote does with MS-word

I am not really very familiar with the Endnote product you refer to as I do all of my bibliographic writing by hand without use of automation tools... but when I saw you post I did a little search on Sourceforge.net and found quite a few hits on the word 'bibliographic' but only one hit on 'Endnote' it appears that the popular way to provide this functionality is by setting up a bibliographic server which then provides the information on the flip of a hat. If this is what you are looking for then maybe you should do a search on Sourceforge.net, or freshmeat.net on either of the previously listed topics. I hope this helps Smile

OpenOffice does have its own bibliography database however it isn't as smooth and efficient as entering citations etc and nor does it automatically generate the list of references.

After my previous post I did a little more digging. It is possible to get EndNote to scan RTF Documents and generate a bibliography.
Obviously you need a licensed copy of EndNote and you have to save your OpenOffice document to RTF format in order to do the scan. I can see that it would be a bit of a pain with large, complicated papers containing images and graphs etc, but I guess it is easier than doing it manually!

When using Endnote and OpenOffice: I'm having trouble 'formatting' a document (after using the scan rtf feature). This means that my citations are still in their temporary form. Can anyone tell me how to do this?

I have also tried using EndNote 7 and its RTF scan feature with Open Office 1.0 and 1.1.2. The RTF scan only seems to work for references which are in the body of the text, and note in an actual footnote or endnote in the document - these remain unformatted. I am not sure if this is an EndNote or an OpenOffice problem - long ago I posted it to the EndNote support forms and never received a reply. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions on this? I suspect it has something to do with how OpenOffice indicates footnotes and endnotes in RTF format (or what EndNote looks for) and there is a mismatch in standards somewhere?
