Anyone else having trouble converting to PDF? I was told when I signed up with CafePress that I should downloads OpenOffice because it made converting to PDF from text so easy, but all I get is different sized dots whenever I try to do it. Can anyone help me? Thanks! |

Could you give some more details? What OS are you suing, and what version of Oo? How are you publishing to PDF from within OOo? _________________ Noho ora mai, ka kite ano.

I am running Windows XP Home Edition and Version 1.1.2 of OO. Pressing the PDF button. I dunno though, I have been known to make tiny mistakes with drastic results before. |

Is the document you are trying to print to PDF confidential? If not, I would be happy to have a go and see waht happens. In the meantime, you could try this out:

I just tried this document, and it converted to PDF AOK. Let me know how it works for you. _________________ Noho ora mai, ka kite ano.

No, my file is not confidential, it's just also not quite finished yet, I was just trying to convert to PDF so that when it came time to do it I knew what to do, how it'd look, etc. |

Sorry, I mistyped the URL. Try http://maxqnz.com/screenshots/comparisonRSM.sxw instead. My apologies. _________________ Noho ora mai, ka kite ano.

I also have Win XP Home and the same version with no problems.
I don't recall the exact situation, but a while back there was some problem using the PDF button that was resolved by using the Menu option instead [File/Export as PDF...]. If that doesn't work for you, try an external freeware PDF machine ..."EASY PDF Creator" is one such. To use that one, and others similarly, you "Print" to that option to create the PDF file.

I think I'll have to use a freeware PDF program, because I did try what you suggested and still only get dots. Absolutely nothing but different size (depending on the font size) dots. *sigh* |

Sorry! You have my sympathy. There are many good free and shareware PDF generators, but if you want to try something else before going that way, how about a complete uninstall of 1.1.2 and reinstalling it? Or even just trying a "repair" of the installation? _________________ Noho ora mai, ka kite ano.

Give the guy a break! OOup to 1.1.3 has really messy pdf export problems. The best work around ( It's not what he's looking for, though) is to use other applications. Which is what I do, but it's REALLY REALLY irritating to have to do this.
The objective is to find a word processer that works on all platforms in the same way. For a while, WordPerfect did the job, but now we can't get WP for Linux. So many of us are now trying to do the WP trick with OpenOffice - except that OO is broken in a lot of places, especially when exporting pdfs. OO pdfs can be viewed on _SOME_ platforms, but not others, which is why you always get these guys saying," ... it works OK on my machine - I don't know what your problem is ..."
The OO pdf bug has been unchanged since the earliest releases right up the the latest release. It says to me that there's nobody home at the OO pdf department, and the lights are out. This is exactly why people go crazy about being squeezed into using open source applications. When it comes to customer support, it's not there. Not only is it not there for just a little while, it's not thereYEAR AFTER YEAR! Only a bunch of helpful geeks saying,"Try another shareware export tool, or try reinstalling, or maybe a different version, blah blah"
The OO pdf problem has to be moved up a level, but with open source, there's no way to so this. It's probably most useful to the OO community to admit that OO is a Mickey Mouse application package that's broken in a lot of places and stop recommending reinstalling, etc. That kind of recommendation just wastes a whole lot of time, and causes excitable people like me to go ballistic. |
