Sorry if this is redundant.
I deleted a user acct without saving docs to another drive.
Did system restore, user acct was back, but O.writer files gone.
Tried a few "free" file-retrieving progs without success.
Any recommendation would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thks

Hi,

This is a Sys-admin problem and hasn't anything to do with OpenOffice.
Nevertheless you didn't tell anything about the OS and version.
It depends all on where the user saved his documents, was it in his home directory on his own system or was it on a network directory?

Martin

Hi Martin,
Appreciate the input.
I understand this isn't really an Oo issue. I just thought there maybe some "trick" answer, as a couple of the progs I used to scan the
Hd didn't e even list odt as an extension to
Look for.
File was saved in user 's documents folder as .odt
Laptop running Xp with all updates.
Thanks again

The more you do on the current system the more data you will loose. Do not run the system.

If you have, or can get hold of, a spare hard drive make a copy of the drive by running a live Linux CD (or USB) like Knoppix or SystemRescueCD and using a program called ddrescue to make an image of the drive, on the spare hard drive. Work on this image then any changes you make won't overwrite important files (need enough free space on the spare hard drive or on the machine you do the recovery with.

photorec or magicrescue can be used to find and recover lost files - run them on a live linux distribution or an installed linux distro using the image created by ddrescue. These are command line programs but do a good job (google will find instructions for how to use them).
I have only ever done this once on a range of hard drives and CDs/DVDs to recover data after a theft. I can't remember all the details now but found all I needed on the internet. (all the above is free software)
