Not the best news, but tolerable. Using this method I'll need to do 15 cut and paste operations rather than one (as touted by the tutorial).

I am going to try at least one more thing before accepting 'defeat'.. My Doc, as is, already has a title page and TOC. Perhaps that is "confusing' the Master formatting macro. .I will try editing those out and then see if the one step will work. I'll post if that approach works.

Thanks for your information.

You hit the wrong button, and it seems that I can't combine both threads. So much for a moderator's powers in this old forum.
I ran a test on an old file with 15 chapters and used File - Send - Make master document, selected Level 1 in the list at the bottom of the screen and everything ran just fine.
Are you by any chance saving as Word file? That might kill the process.
You can send the file to me, then I do the conversion and send the result back to you if you like.

Most of the text was originally done in OO in the .sxw format. A few early chapters were done in MisWord Crying or Very sad (Part of my time wasting experiences with MisOffice 2007 that drove me to OO.) Then, for editing by others, I had recently saved the whole file as a .doc.

I thought that might be a problem early on, so before I began trying to build the MasterDoc. I re-saved the large file in both .sxw and .odt. and tried the MasterDoc approach with those. Neither of those would convert as promised. However my guess is that there is still something in there from Mis that triggers the fault.

I am going to do some more clean-up of the file and then try the conversion again. I'll be back with the results later.

Thanks again.

Make sure that you apply Heading 1 paragraph style to your chapter titles.

Thanks for the help.

I am defaulting to the longer-but-surer procedure. Rolling Eyes
