lost document

Hello,

I had a document on a memory stick which I was using but when I tried to save and close it it said it was locked by an unknown person. I could do nothing with it, so copied the whole document and resaved it under a new name.

I test opened the new document a couple of times to be sure it was OK then deleted the old copy [so as not to get them confused].

When I put the memory stick back into the computer it showed the
ASCII box which I just ticked as OK, but the document itself is just a load of 'hash' signs.

How do I recover this document please?
