can't change to single spacing

I have a microsoft office word document that I opened in openoffice and it won't let me change paragraphs that the lines are double spaced to single spaced. I know I am over looking something but can't figure out what. Any help is appreciated very much. Thanks. Joseph

Please: version number of OOo, and if possible of the Word version that the file was made with. Can you make other changes in the file? can you change the spacing after saving in OOo's own format odt?
