|
|
I have created a document with headings, and a table of contents, but no alphabetical index. I want to create an alphabetical index later.
However:
1. The document now has Table of Contents, but it appears to have nothing in it.
2. Instead, there is an index at the end, showing some entries that I evidently left in the document after some earlier editing.
Where am I going wrong ? |

| That is what I have been using, and I cannot find anything in it to account for what is happening. |

That would be the result if the paragraph styles used in the document do not match the styles assigned to the table of contents level. It can also be impacted by the whichever of the option boxes on the "Index/Table" tab have been selected - Outline, Additional Styles and/or Index Marks.
That part of the Guide is fairly thorough and if after making every check the problem still persists I would suggest you post your request in the other forum at http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/ where you can upload a copy of your document to allow it to be examined by the experts in that forum for the source of the problem.
Two other tutorials that are worth looking at:

Most important is to open Tools - Outline numbering and to assign the outline levels to the heading styles that you use. If you link level 1 to Heading 1 etc. and then update your TOC, it should list all headings correctly. _________________ LibreOffice 3.6.3; OOo 3.4.1 on Windows Vista

I am afraid that I am still not getting results, but thank you.
By the way, the link that you gave me, Arineckalg, takes me to a surprising destination -- some sort of advertising for British Telecom, I think. |

Most peculiar. I have just checked all three links and they took me to the correct web sites. _________________ When this issue has been resolved, it helps other users of the forum if you add the word [Solved] to the Subject line of your 1st post (edit button top right).

I have made a good deal of progress, and could I ask you just to consider this.
1. I have: (a) outline-numbered the document, and (b) divided the document into chapters, each chapter being preceded with a title in the form e.g. of the expression 'Chapter x -- Creating opportunities.'
2. I have designated each such expression an Entry in the Table of Contents.
3. When I up-date the TOC, it now shows those entries correctly.
4. However, what I cannot seem to do is to arrange matters so that the TOC also shows the relevant outline-number, probably because I cannot work out what to put in the structure-line for the TOC.
Can you kindly advise ? |

What do you mean with outline number? _________________ LibreOffice 3.6.3; OOo 3.4.1 on Windows Vista

I hoped that the TOC might show the relevant level-numbering, for example:
1. Chapter 1 -- Creating opportunities.
1.1 Opportunities at school.
1.2 Opportunities at work.
,,, and so on. As matters stand, my TOC shows that, but without the 1, 1.1, 1.2, &c. |

Toy around with the options in Tools - Outline Numbering. It's really quite easy if you do it instead of reading technical guides about it. Copy some of your text to a blank document to avoid data loss and go for it - try anything you can think of in changing the settings and make a note of how that affects the looks of your file. _________________ LibreOffice 3.6.3; OOo 3.4.1 on Windows Vista
