mailmerge + italian

Hello.
I have a little problem with mailmerge...
I am Italian, and I'd like to use mailmerge.
What's wrong with this? You know, being Italian, I use characters such as è, à and the like; these are not displayed when using mailmerge.
I mean, I have such characters in my text file, the source file; as I use this file as a source for a mailmerge, all such characters are replaced by empty squares. That's annoying...

Can it be fixed?

I've just realized that if I convert the source text file into a spreadsheet file, it's fine.
