|
|
To All:
I recently made an Oo (writer) file and typed the underbar ("_") too
many times and it changed itself to a horizontal line. Now
I can't get rid of the !@#$$%^ line. I tried
- cutting it out
- retyping the last few sentences
- pasting the upper half to a new document
and this @#$%^& line still appear. How do I get rid of it?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Okay that is a well know strange thing but there is a solution:
Right button near that line than option paragraph than borders and at last set borders to none. If you know a lot about styles. You know where to find this option also.
In future to prevent this:
To stop drawing a line when you type three identical characters:
OpenOffice.org automatically draws a line when you type three of the following characters and press Enter: - _ = * ~ #
1.Choose Tools - AutoCorrect/AutoFormat.
2.Click the Options tab.
3.Clear the Apply border check box.
good luck,

Thank you for replying.
It doesn't seem to work. After I click "none", and then, "OK"
on the "Paragraph ... : Border" window, nothing happens and
it keeps reversing back to "0.05 pt". I.e., if I repeat to see what
happened, the "Paragraph.."Border" window will continue
to say "0.05 pt". Is there a way to override or force the
document to change back?
p.s. I noticed this problem earlier when trying to setup the
border for the entire document.

I rather not send it because it has sensitive stuffs in it.
However, I was able to copy and paste to a new file successfully
by avoiding all the places where I repeated a character 3 times
(I had that in several places). So thank for that comment -
that was my original problem.

I have the same problem. I'm going to have to run out and buy a copy of word if I can't get this fixed soon.
Any ideas? Why can't I change the border style in a way that actually changes the border style? |

I just tried it (that is a strange feature). But was able to remove the border easily.
I right clicked on the paragraph that had the border. (You can highlight several pargraphs at once and do this if you are not sure which paragraph has the border tied to it.) Then I chose Paragraph from the menu. Then the Borders tab.
In there, you have to select the box in the "Line and arrangment" section that has nothing (the first box). That will eliminate any bordering at all, regardless of what you set the "Style" as.
If you want the border, but want to change the style, then play with those boxes under "Line and Arrangment."
It does work. If your copy is not working right, then try repairing the installation by running the install script again. Or redownload and try installing again. I think it is a little drastic to go buy Word at $229 when it may be a problem with the install. Or a problem with not understanding the way this feature works.
Try again, or try repairing your install. Because it does work. If you want to shell out the $229 for Word, that is your choice, but it seems drastic if this is the only reason to do so. And if you do get it working, I can give you my PayPal account and you can send me the $229 if you just insist on spending it somewhere. _________________ dpeach

Well, I guess buying Word would be a drastic step.
I couldn't get it to work. I uninstalled, downloaded OpenOffice again and reinstalled, but no luck. I uninstalled that, downloaded the latest release candidate, installed it (very pretty, by the way), and still no luck.
I finally had to save it as a html file, then edit the source file with a text editor to remove the lines. Once the lines were gone I was able to copy and paste the whole thing back into OO. , and then reformat the document. What a pain! |

Usually the instance this happens (changing of "____"), hit UNDO and the problem is gone. Maybe you should try this if it work for you _________________ # : - ) |

| I couldn't just CTRL-z. The lines were added a couple of weeks ago to mark off sections to be worked on. The trouble arose when those sections of the document were completed, and the lines needed to be removed. I was able to move some lines to the end of the document. Sometimes removing a section heading would remove the line, but adding one afterwards would make it mysteriously appear again. |

If a paragraph border is inserted and you later add additional paragraphs above the lined/bordered one then the border stays put but the "condition" becomes attached to the new paragraph so you may have to remove it from several paragraphs.
If this seems to be the case then select several paragraphs above the border and do Format > Default (which will also remove any other direct/local formatting to your paragraph styles). |

| That worked!!! A little too late for me, but it's nice to know there is a solution. I'm sure someone else will come along who needs it. |
