Brand new to OpenOffice....advice needed.

Brand new here and brand new to OpenOffice.I just built my first computer, and I was pointed to this after talking with a friend about the ridiculously high cost of MS Office, especially when needing it for three computers.

That being said, my main concern is just being able to do anything with Word documents that I did with Word, so do I simply download the suite and that's it? In other words, is it compatible with Word documents "right out of the box", or is there some configuration I need to know about?

OOo is generally compatible with word documents. 100% compatibility is not guaranteed because the filters were reverse engineered so not every thing in a word doc will be reproduced. All I can say is try it. Download from here www.openoffice.org .
