|

Is there any way to get Writer to Paste as unformatted text by default? So that I can just hit Control-V and don't have to go through so many steps with "Paste Special?"
Sorry to ask so many question, I've just started using the program. |

| No, but you can long-click the Paste icon and choose Unformatted in the roll-down menu. |

| Although I know of no way to choose an option for paste unformatted text as the default, you can record Edit > Paste Special > Unformatted Text and then assign that macro to the Ctrl+V key combo. |

| Thanks! Great suggestions. But I just tried to create the macro and can't seem to do it. Very confusing. How do you assign it to a key stroke? How do you make it global instead of just applying to one document? It doesn't give any good instructions and isn't intuitive. |

|
|
After you've recorded the macro, go to the Tools > Macro > Macro menu item. Find your macro (mine is called PasteUnformatted) in the righthand box (by default your macro will already be in the Standard > Module1 folder on the lefthand side). Single click your macro name and click the Assign button to the right.
OPTIONAL: To make the macro universal, select OpenOffice.org at the upper-right (instead of the Writer option).
In the Keyboard tab, scroll down to the key(s) you want to use for your PasteUnformatted macro. Click once on the key sequence of your choosing.
At the bottom, under Functions, in the Category box scroll down to OpenOffice.org BASIC Macros. Double click it or single click the little plus sign. Next do the same for Standard below it. Single click on Module1. You should see your macro name appear to the right in the Function box. Single click it. Finally, at the upper-right again, click Modify.
Voila, your macro is assigned to the key combination you chose. You can also add it to a menu by using the Menu tab instead of the Keyboard tab. _________________ Don "Freiheit" Eitner |

Nice to know:
New in OpenOffice.org Writer 2.0:
Shortcut for Edit - Paste Special
You can now use the keyboard to perform the action otherwise found under Edit - Paste Special.
Shift+Ctrl+V

Being able to set the default paste operation is one feature
that would probably get me to use OO on a daily basis.
I know I am not alone in wanting this feature.
Is this really that big of a programming job or just not as fun
as dancing icons or splash screens?
OO has gotten better but in general I still use MS Office 97
which can do anything I need and loads much faster.
Granted it doesnt have the ability to set default paste either
which is still annoying.
Regards,
Matt |

I know, I struggled with MS Office XP at work every day when all I want is to paste as unformatted text (in Word and Excel). Even OOo 2.0's shift-ctrl-v is only a halfway solution, because the user still has to choose which format to paste in. The macro I made for OOo back in the 1.1.x days (see above) was exactly what I needed. I haven't looked into doing the same for Office XP at work but I don't believe (I may be wrong) that you can assign a keyboard shortcut for a macro nor add it into the menus the way you can in OOo. _________________ Don "Freiheit" Eitner |

You can then use Alt+Edit > Alt+Unformatted Paste to run your macro (a bit clumsy).
Oops - should I have posted this in an M$ forum?

In OO Calc, I like to copy from other sources (like credit card payment details) and paste a all this stuff into a single cell. Usually it is highly formatted from a web site. In Excel, I could always double click on the cell and, when pasted, it would all be in the cell without changing that cell formatting. Not so in OO Calc.
So my workaround is to first paste the info into notepad, capture that info again from the notepad, and then paste into the cell.
Now, if someone could write a macro to do all that with one click , it would be a great thing. Like:
user captures info and clicks on the desired cell
go out and open a notepad,
paste info into the notepad,
RE capture all info in the notepad,
paste captured info into the cell
Close the notepad without saving. _________________ Tim Bennett |

To set unformatted pasting as the default for Ctrl-V in OO 3 for all apps do the following:
- open Writer (not Calc: Writer has more paste unformatted options, and this doesn't work going from Calc to Writer (still asks to choose paste type if this is done in Calc and then used in Writer, but not vice versa))
- record a macro of Paste Unformatted action (Tools > Macros > Record Macro)
- then in Tools > Customise > Keyboard
- select OpenOffice.org to change for all OO apps (eg Writer, Calc etc)
- find your just-recorded macro under Functions > Category > OpenOffice.org Macros (default is user > standard > module1)
- select the shortcut key Ctrl-V to override default paste
- press Modify
- press OK |
