is there any way to protect a couple of columns alone in a sheet so that the data in that column alone cannot be edited and the data in other columns can be edited....???

The default Protection property of all cells is "Protected", so the first thing to do is to select all cells on the sheet then go Format|Cells.. to bring up the "Format Cells" dialogue then on the "Protection" tabsheet remove the tick from the "Protected" checkbox then click OK.
Now that all cells are unprotected select the columns to be protected then bring up the same dialogue and replace the tick in the "Protected" checkbox followed by OK.
The columns will be protected after the sheet is protected (Tools|Protect Document|Sheet...)
