After resetting profile via "nuclear option" (renaming USER folder and letting OO3.4 write a new one) the thesaurus worked, but only until I shut down OO 3.4. Once restarted, the problem returned and the thesaurus option under TOOLS was greyed out. It works as long as I don't close OO 3.4.
Thanks for any suggestions...

It worked! I deleted all dictionaries except "American English Spell Checking 1.0" and the "English spelling and hyphenation dictionaries and thesaurus 2010.03.16." Thesaurus now seems to work normally.
