The documents can be edited, from within OOo. Doing so is, however, tricky. You have to treat each document as an OLE source, and edit that way. [The documentation for how to do that, can be found at OOoAuthors.]

OOo 1.3 hasn't been relased. is not even planned. I'll assume you mean either OOo 1.0.3, or OOo 1.1.3.

Editing/displaying embedded documents is tricky. Especially when they are in non-native formats for the program that is editing/displaying them.
Are you able to convert everything to the equivalent OOo format, and then do the embedding? If so, go that route.
