|
|
Using a recent version of Ghostscript to "print" a document as a pdf file, the file size is 12K. When using the PDF export from OOo 1.1 RC then same file produces a pdf file that is 77K.
I found only 2 marked differences between the files.
1. Adobe Acrobat reader 5.0 shows the document properties of the 12K file as PDF version 1.3 using Ghostscript 8.0, where the 77K file lists PDF version 1.4.
2. The 77K file seems to have more embedded fonts than the 12K file.
I am no PDF expert, so can someone explain the differences between these two methods of generating PDF files, and the merits of each?
Or, is this a sign of a problem, either in configuration or PDF generation (by either OOo or Ghostscript)?
Thanks in advanced,
Bill |

| What I've heard is that OpenOffice does not use the proprietary compression used by other pdf implementations. |

| I've actually gotton the opposite results. Smaller files on OOo than w/Ghostscript & Ghostview. I think that this is because Ghostscript offers far more setting options. IMHO the OOo is much easier to use (one click) but for discriminating pdf creation, Ghostscript is a bit better. |

If the reason is why OOo embeds fonts then FINE!
I have had some trouble with OpenType fonts from Adobe; they were not embedded? Did anyone encounter that specific problem too? |

I realise that this isn't strictly relevant to OpenOffice, but I like the OOo method of producing .pdfs because I can produce colour files, whereas I have only ever been able to produce B/W ones in GhostScript.
I assume this is because I am using the HP LaserJet 4/4M (monochrome postscript laser printer) driver. If anyone can point me to a colour driver that will produce printer files that I can turn to colour .pdfs in GhostScript, I would be hugely grateful.

There are several Apple Laserwriter Color Printer Drivers that come with Windows...
Or you can download the Adobe Generic Postscript Driver and the Adobe PDD files for free as well. |
