|

Hi,
I was wondering two things, and couldn't find previous forum entries/documentation on them--
1:- Is it possible to automatically convert all normal quotes (' and ") to "smart quotes" in a given document (i.e. not as I type, but after they've been typed)?
2:- My paragraphs are in the style "First Line Indent." I would like the first paragraph in a series to have no first line indent, as they do in most books. Is there a way to do this automatically? If not, that's alright. The first question is of more concern. Actually, I'll sneak a third question in here - are there any book-like templates available for OOo?
Thanks for any help you can give,
Matt |

Question two:
As far as I remember there is two built in styles: Body Text & Body Text Indent. I use them with headings as follows:
Modify ANY heading style, and from the ORGANIZE tab select:
Next style: Text Body
Then modify the style 'Text Body', and select:
Next style: Text Body Indent
Then modify the style Text 'Body Indent', and select:
Next style: Text 'Body Indent
Look at the field "LINKED WITH", this is interesting. If Body Text Indent is linked with Text Body, then Body Text Indent will use the same font that is defined in Body Text. It will inherit settings from Text Body. |

Question 1. I can’t find a way to do it automatically but you could use Find & Replace.
I’d open a new doc and do Insert > Special Character and insert all the Smart Quote characters you want to use. If your standard font doesn’t have them Thorndale does. Then copy say the beginning double smart quote and go to your doc and use Find & Replace to find a space followed by a standard quote and replace with with space followed by the smart quote you paste in. Do the same with the end quotes except search for the quote followed by a space.
That ought to get most of the quotes except things like a sentence that starts with a quote, etc. You will just need to search again for only a standard quote and clean those up individually.
Question 3. Not that I know of for OO but SO has one as part of the extras that you pay for. |

That doesn’t actually work. I tried it with an existing document, and then I tried it with a new document (I just wrote a paragraph of text with some straight quotes). I tried using “select all” first, and with not selecting anything. All the while, I made sure I had “replace quotes” checked in the AutoCorrect options (both “single” and “double”). It still won’t replace any quote marks _________________ http://tinarussell.wordpress.com/ |

I have not tried this so it's a guess; but if you are using headings perhaps you could have a NEXT STYLE after the heading with that Style (no indent) and the subsiquent style set to indented?
Actually I think I did this once _________________ jrkrideau

If I remember correctly, it only works for paragraphs with the Default paragraph style.
@jrkrideau: the original post is over seven years old. And I fear that he wanted to apply that formatting to an existing document. _________________ LibreOffice 3.6.3; OOo 3.4.1 on Windows Vista
