More information is needed, Operating system at least. Do you mean as when opening documents? Do you mean when starting a new document? If the former it will depend on the Operating system. If the later just open Writer and start using it.

1) Go to the folder that has you document files.
2) Select one that has the .doc extension.
3) Right click to bring up the context menu.
4) Click on properties.
5) Find the "Opens with" label.
6) Click the "Change" button.
7) On the next display you will see "Recommended Programs".
Cool If Writer is listed select and click the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".
9) Then click "OK" at the bottom of the display.
10) Click OK to close all the windows back to the directory listing.
