A list of all requests for dual monitor support in impress

Hi,
I've been wanting dual monitor support in Impress for quite some time now.
I looked for the feature request on the openoffice.org bug tracker and thought it was odd that the dual monitor feature request only had 8 votes. I thought it would be alot more popular than that. So I looked around a little more, and discovered that alot more people want to use this than I initially thought. We've just been posting the same requests in different parts of the forum or entering identitical feature requests for dual monitor support on the bug tracking system, rather than all voting for the same feature request.
Anyway, here is a whole list of all the different posts I could find on these forums or the bug tracking systems in the past hour or so that I've been looking.

My hope is, we can make this more obvious so that it stops cluttering the forums and bug databases, which I'm sure the people running those will appreciate. On top of that, I'm hoping that if we all vote for the same feature request, the developers may begin to realise just how many people want this feature. (If the votes are spread out over several identical feature requests, it will look like less people are interested than is the reality)

For those of you who care, 77 votes on the bug tracker is heaps. That would make this issue the 6th most voted for issue on the entire bug database. So you know where I got that from, I did a search for any isues which had received more than 76 votes, and only 5 current issues came up. Have a look here

(Like many others, I'm hoping to use Impress in a church environment, where live presentations are really useful but hard to predict, so dual monitor is essential for working well. Hopefully one day this feature will be included. It would also be really helpful for students or teachers doing presentations in classes. And making a sweeping generalisation here, usually people in education or in religion haven't got the most money in the world, so they'd be glad not to have to pay for powerpoint for this functionality. And by the way, I only just registered as a user, so hi everyone! )

I just assumed this did this. I was about to switch to this and test it on our dual monitor setup at Church and this is a big problem. I'm not sure how you can use this in a serious environment without it.

I ditched windows after it crashed a few times at critical moments, however, I desperately need multimonitor support in Impress.... or I need an alternative, otherwise I will end up crawling back to Windows just for one stupid piece of software.

Forgive my igrnoarance, I'm new to the board and do not seem to find the information in the help pages.

I very much wish to support the request for dual monitor support, particularly, having a speaker's view with the notes on the laptop and the slides on the beamer.. (Hey, I don't even need it in a church.)

How do I vote for this (or these) issues, please?

I cannot find the "Vote for this issue" link to which the help pages refer, despite being logged in. So, clearly, I must be doing something wrong.

I also want dual display support in OpenOffice!
I was absolutely sure that this VITAL feature was to come in 2.0, but it isn't even planned! What a shame...

PLEASE put it on your To Do list, dear OOo programmers!

I had the same problem as you had. Finally I solved it with IrfanView from http://www.irfanview.de/ it's an free picture viewer. I export the Slides in Pictures, and made the Slideshow with IrfanView. It's not a good solution, but it works... Smile

But please OOo-Team, implement a real Dual-Head-Support! People more and more need's it!

While doing research for a book on the X WIndow System, I discovered a possible work-around using an Xinerama display in Linux. I have tested it here on my laptop with an external monitor and it works well, but has some limitations.

This kludge uses the "Normal" slide view and two displays of different resolutions. The control screen displays the entire OOo impress display, and the projector displays an enlargement of just the slide portion of the window. This permits you to preview the available slides and select the one you wish to display by double-clicking on it.

To set this up:

(1) Configure a Xinerama display. This is a display where a virtual screen is divided into two or more areas which are displayed on separate monitors. If you have an nVidia card with two outputs (or a laptop with an nVidia card), you can use Twinview instead of the standard Xinerama configuration.

(2) Configure the projected screen to have a lower resolution than the control screen. I used 1400x1050 (native resolution) on the laptop LCD and 800x600 on the external display.

(3) Set the offsets of the control screen to "0 0" and the offsets of the projected screen to (say) "200 200". What this does is cause the projected screen to show a subset of the control screen. The xorg.conf ServerLayout section will look like this:

Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
Screen 1 "Screen1" 200 200

Or if you're using Twinview with an nVidia chipset, the Device section of xorg.conf will contain a line something like this:

MetaModes "800x600 +200+200, 1400x1050 +0+0"

(4) Start the X server, then start Impress. (If you're using Gnome and nVidia TwinView, the panel bars will be in the middle of the screen, since the smaller projector screen is considered Primary. Drag the panel bars to the bottom of the screen). Use the "Normal" Impress view, with the slide pane down the left and the Tasks pane on the right. Adjust the width of the middle plane by dragging the dividers between the panes until the image is the correct width for the projector. Scroll the middle pane until the slide fills the screen.

You can now scroll through the available slides on the left-hand side of the screen and select the one you with to view, and then activate it with a double-click.

This solution is not elegant, but it does provide a workaround until the necessary feature is implemented in OOo.

Just like to add my vote for this feature. I just returned from a couple of conferences where I was using OOo Impress and had a few (but only a few) problems ... this being one of them.

I really love OOo, especially that features that we the users suggest get serious consideration by the developers. I've even converted others at work and home to give up the MS stuff for OOo. Keep up the good work OOo developers!

But its a pain. I had it working once, and then exited out becuase I use WorshipHim for church worship projection. Then when I tried to get it to work again it didn't.

But what I did get to work was to set the 2nd monitor as primary (projection). Start Impress. Pull the window over to the secondary (computer monitor). And then start slide show.

I was hoping to find out how to get it to work again when I had it working right.
