Hello Calc users,

The OOoAuthors project of OpenOffice.org is working on the User Guide for OOo version 2. Currently we are writing the chapters for the
Calc guide and would like input, technical assistance, editorial reviews and just plain grammar and spelling checks from Calc users like you. All of the OOo components, such as Writer, Draw, Base and Impress are being documented, so if you have a preference for one of them we have work for you, too.

Please see this thread for more information, OOoAuthors is looking for volunteers.

maybe it's just me, but i've found some confusion in the guide when i try to figure out where i am.

for example, in the section "Grids" i finally figured out that it's regarding "charts" and not "spreadsheets" -- i was searching everywhere on the insert menue for "Insert - Grids."
the same goes for the "Insert" section -- turns out, i was in the insert section for charts and didn't realize it! (if you do a find for "gridlines" in help, you'll get three results so you can see what exactly i'm talking about, but this happens to me a lot in the help file!)

what would help is a function of moving up a level -- not just back or home, but up -- or at least seeing a tree to find where in the submenu i am.

send me a private message if i need to clarify more (or if there's already a way to do this and i've not figured it out!).

thanks, aaron

I have just downloaded and installed OO 2.x. There is on-line help for Writer but it is apparently missing for Calc. Surely "Currently working on Calc" does not mean there is no help whatsoever until it's finished? Can the help files be downloaded separately?

Thanks,

OOoAuthors does not write the online help for OpenOffice.org. We are writing user guides...handbooks, if you will.

This "bug" may be the culprit you are facing:
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=59499
On the ISSUE 59499 page there is this advice:
Quote:
It appears that scalc.jar is somewhat incomplete.
I obtained a working help system simply replacing the files
scalc.db
scalc.ht
scalc.jar
scalc.key
in INSTALL_DIR\help\en\ with those present in the Linux packages.

Note that the OOo2.0.0 help files packaged for Windows are different from those
packaged for Linux, so maybe there is some difference in contents.

I posted the 4 files on rapidshare.de so you can download them following the URL
http://rapidshare.de/files/9878853/OOo201LinuxEng-CalcHelpFiles.zip.html
(and avoid the 100MB download for the whole Linux package).

Hope this can be useful.
Mauro

There are also these "forum" discussions of the problem:
http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=29628
or...
http://www.8daysaweek.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=311

But other than offering you these referrals I have no idea what else to do.

Yes this was a corrupted/missing files problem. Replacing the files with those attached in this post solved the problem. Thanks.

I think a list of all the operators and functions with a basic description of there uses would be about the handiest thing you could possibly add.

Anything would be an improvement over the last help file. Do not take lessons from Microsoft. I can't find any help at all, either here on the forum or especially in the so-called help file of the version I have now. Very frustrating.
