I want to create a new icon for a customized toolbar.

Using Linux Gimp I have created 16x16 and 24x24 bmp images and put them into installed/share/config/symbol. When I then customize the toolbar sometimes I can see my icon, but when I apply it to the toolbar button the icon goes blank. Othertimes the icon is blank when viewed in the customize buttons selection.

Can anyone help please?
