Hi guys !

Lately I'm experiecing following problem regarding Open Office 1.0.1 on several machines : when I try to shutdown Windows ( 98, 2000, XP ) - nothing happens. I discovered that soffice.exe service hangs ( stops responding ) at shutdown procedure so I have to End that Task manually. I also noticed that size of the soffice.exe file is different on problematic machines ( on one machine it reached allmost 100MB ) but after reboot ( I used force ) Very Happy the size drops to normal size ( about 10 MB ) and then it is possible to shutdown machine normally.
Can somebody tell me, what could be the problem ? Will the installation of OO 1.0.2 solve my problems ?

Thanks a lot !

I had a similar problem: Exclamation

When shutting down a Windows 98 box, soffice.exe hangs...

I discovered that the problem was in the quick-start icon near the clock.

I just removed the quick-start atach from the Startup menu group and the problem gone for good! Wink

Thanks for the aswer, tyFUZZ but :

I tried out your solution, but without the quickstarter loaded the startup of OO apps lasts forever and then everytime I start Writer or Calc , it automatically loads quickstarter icon in the tray and soffice.exe service starts again in the Task Manager - I don't know.

Any more ideas ? Very Happy

Thanks

OpenOffice quickstarter indeed has some problems. To disable Quickstarter, right-click the tray icon and uncheck "Load OpenOffice.org during system ..."

Well, regarding the speed problem, I have it too. My help was an upgrade recently done
(I went from a AMD K6-2 533 to a AMD Duron 2000) and that really rocked my OOo!!!

Unfortunetly I believe that OOo must be some kind of a Upper-level programming
language driven project (programming language is not my strenght) and it is really slow
on some old machines... Shocked

So, in my new AMD Duron machine, there is no need fo the quick-start icons... Rolling Eyes

PS-By the way, I find out the same happens with KDE and Gnome on the same
machines too... My bosses almost killed me when they saw the OOo running speed
compared with win98 on the same boxes... Any way, the money saved on OpenSource
software went directly to brand-new speed-monster computers!!! Twisted Evil

Hi

The experts recommend that whenever you shut down Windows, you first shut down all other applications. Having Windows forcibly shut down any application against it's will is a very bad thing.

Also (esp with Win 98 SE) if you happen to be on a Network you should always log off and then hit escape at the login screen so as not to be in the Network when you try to shut down.

After reading all the messages nobody has a solution...
Someone knows how to solve the problem or if there is a patch for solving...

Lots of thanks

Hi Paolo

There are so many issues that can face Windows on shutdown it will be very difficult to get to the root of it. It can just as easily be, say, your virus scanner or any other background task that is getting grumpy with OOo when you try to shut down. For example, on my Win 98SE machine Zone Alarm alays crashes on shutdown. It's one of those things.

2 solutions available:

Try the OOo1.1 release candidate - if it is a problem with OOo1.0.1 you can't expect a fix as it's now obsolete. You might find some new features that you like or:

Switch off the quickstarter before you shut down.

Yes it does this type of thingi on WIN XP too. after i removed the quick start icon , problem is neglible but WIN XP will hang on office 97 as well and many other programs and that also after applying a 100M service pack. We just have to accept that the powers that be, choose to provide this quality of software. Imagine the B747 flying by wire using this type of software. I wonder????

My solution has been tested to work on this machine:

Win2k SP4 and XP pro SP1
OOo 1.0.3

Disable quick start on the system tray icon (as mentioned above).

Didn't test any other systems... yet Smile.
