|
|
Hi All,
I am using 1.9.125.
And, I have a pile of WPS (M$ Works) documents I'd like access to. (Works was
on a defunct computer and it is not reloadable.) As there is no OO converter (yet?),
does anyone have advice on how to import these documents?
Many thanks,
--Tony |

Isn't it strange that Microsoft makes competing products Microsoft Office and Microsoft Works Office? They aren't even very compatible with each other.
OOo cannot open these directly.
If you search for WPS on this forum, you will find the answer to this issue. IIRC, Microsoft produces a free-of-charge converter to Microsoft Word format, which OOo opens. |

"Microsoft Works Office" ?
No such thing, MS Office is an office suite with very advanced features and a heavy price tag, and Microsoft Works is a suite with very basic features and a much lower price. They are not competing at all.
You can open Works files in Office, but the import filter is not installed by default, that is odds, some 400kb cant hurt. _________________ www.kaaredyret.dk - OpenOffice resources (templates, extensions, tutorials and more) !

There is a 'Works suite' which is Works and Word. Most pointless combination ever. _________________ Arch Linux

I meant Microsoft Works Suite which includes a word processor, spreadsheet, and database application. When some people say Microsoft Works, they mean just the word processor.

OpenOffice.org has a much lower price than Microsoft Office and OOo is missing some of Office's advanced features, but they still compete.
As for the price tag, my boss bought Microsoft Works with Word for $100. He was very happy.
Microsoft Works and Office are based on different code bases. It would make more sense to me to remove features from Office and sell that instead of Works. They would, at least, have compatible file formats and probably similar user interfaces. |

Indeed, but I thought we were talking about Microsoft Office competing against Microsoft works. _________________ www.kaaredyret.dk - OpenOffice resources (templates, extensions, tutorials and more) !

I am trying to say that products can compete without having similar prices or features. Another example is that Microsoft says its latest Windows and Office compete with older versions: people don't want to upgrade. While Office 2003 isn't much better than Office 97, Windows 2000 is much better than Windows 98.
Consumers make mutually exclusive purchasing decisions, and many people think it's either Word, Works (the word processor), or WordPerfect. |
