Back in the days of OOo 1.1.5, if I renamed an HTML file as *.xls, it would open in Calc (in the same way that Excel opens similar files). Now in the brave new world of OOo 2.0 the same files open in Writer, which is not what I want it to do.

I've tried associating *.xls files with scalc.exe, but it still opens in Writer.

Help!!!...........Phil Holland

I've found a bit more information in the Issues log (50371, 52639, 56295), but each issue has been rejected as OOo 2.0 is setup to select the component based on the files contents, not based on the file extension.

Until now I've been creating 'Excel' spreadsheets for a number of applications by renaming HTML output as *.xls, which can be transparently sent as Excel files. The recipients are usually unaware of their source. OOo 1.1.5 behaves just like Excel, so, as a non-Excel user, I saw what the recipients saw. This new behaviour of OOo 2.0 makes me less keen to adopt it, and, for the time being, I'm going to retain a copy of OOo 1.1.5 just for reading Excel/HTML files.

Anyone suffering too?

Yes!

I think my problem is basically the same thing. I think there are many applications where this functionality will be missed. e.g. my company (~40 desktops) is considering switching to OOO but in order to do this the're would have to be a large web development effort to convert all of their intranet reports to native excel rather than just packaging up the HTML tables as excel objects as we do now. Which sadly will have to be added on to the cost appraisal of the switch.

If you install the (Optional) XSLT Sample filters, you will be able to export something similar. (Save As... Microsoft Excel 2003 XML)
