editing a web page

I'm new to OpenOffice and Windows XP, have been using FrontPage Express with Windows 98. I'm trying to edit a web page to print a smaller version of the page, without graphics, unnecessary text, etc. In FP I could highlight almost any line and delete. In OpenOffice, I cannot seem to do that. Am I missing something? What I end up with is a title, a huge gap where deleted info was, then text I want, then more large spaces, etc., which makes for 2 pages of printing instead of 1 with everything spread out. I am used to being able to scoot everything up to about half a page in FP and then print that one page with room for notes. Thanks for any help.
