|
|
O/S = XP (Home), SvcPk 2
OOo = Ver. 2.0 (Final)
Language = EN (USA)
I cannot get my changes to the keyboard layout to "save." No matter how I name the file or what kind of file extension I use, when I return to OOo, the keyboard layout is still in Original default mode; and none of the keystrokes assignments that I made are in the keyboard assignments.
Steps I am using:
Tools >> Customize >> {Keyboard Tab]
Select (radio button) OpenOffice.org OR Writer (either one; NEITHER one works).
In "Shortcut Keys," scroll to "Shift+Ctrl+S" [Note, this is referenced in numerous places in the Writer as the shortcut key assignment for bringingh up the Special Characters dialog box; but NO ASSIGNMENT APPEARS for this keystroke seque3nce!}
HIghlight "Shift+Ctrl+S"
In Functions >> Category, click "Insert"
In Functions >> Function, click "Special Character"
I Click the MODIFY button. The keystroke sequence of "Ctrl+Shift+S" APPEARS to have been assigned as the "keystroke" sequence to
"Insert > Special Character".
Now, I click the SAVE button.
The Windows dialog, SaveAs dialog box appears. It is captioned as
follows:
"Save Keybooard Configuration"
The file type filter,however is defaulted to "all files (*.*). This is not very helpful.
The folder/directory in which the SaveAs dialog opens, moreover, is just whatever folder/directory I happened to save a file to the last time I saved a file in Writer.
Well, what to do here?
So, the first thing I do is change the file filter in the "Save Keybooard Configuration" dialog box to "cONFIGURATION." This makes "sense" to me; but, then, when did computers ever
"make sense?" Right?
All right, so far, "maybe" so good.
Now, I navigate to the folder of
"C:\{...}share\config\soffice.cfg\global\accelerator\en-US"
folder. NO files, of course, appear. If I change the file filter back to to "all files (*.*)," a file by the name of "default.xml" appears.
I check this file. It APPEARS to have some kind of keyboard assignments in it to menu functions. Maybe I am in the correct location? Who knows?
So, taking a clue here, I save what I think are going to be my keyboard assignements to "MyKeyboard.xml".
I exit the "customize" dialog box. There is NO "OK" button for me to press. I press <Enter>; Nope, that doesn't get me out of "customize."
So, I click the "X" in the upper right hand corner of the "Customize" dialog box.
I now return to Writer.
I resume typing my document to the place where I want to insert my "Special Characters." NYADA! ZERO! NICHTS! NICHEVO! NON!
BUPKE!
Nothing happens.
I get the same non-results regardless of whether I try to make the change globally throughout the Suite (which is what I really want to do) or whether I confine the attempted changes to Writer.
Using the LOAD button in the Customization dialog box helps not one bit. NYADA! NICHTS! NICHEVO! BUPKE!
would one of you please tell me what I am doing incorrectly and tell me how to assign accelerator keys to the keyboard so that they remain and I can use them in my work.
I would really, really, really, appreciate it.
Thank you,
Nuncus |

No need to do all that save and load business. Just click on OK after modify.
My guess the idea is that you use save and load to copy keyboard configurations to other Open Office Installations. _________________ Fonts * Opera * Oo Tips * FAQ * New Forum

Well, you are absolutely correct about there being an OK button on the dialog box.
The dialog box was so big, however, that the bottom third was chopped off; when I tried to use the Windows, right-click menu bar on dialog box > Move command, however, I got nowhere -- completely unresponsive.
I used the keyboard to do the "OK", and it seems like I can in fact map to the default keyboard.
What I REALLY need to do, though, is make about two "custom" keyboards to accomodate a couple of specialized things I need to do in order to get my work done; that's going to require that I have a couple of alternative keyboards I can load up when the occaision arises.
So, since you obviously know something about the keyboard configurations and how to do them, how do I make the alternate keyboards, save them, and have them handy?
My initial inclination is to do this:
1. SaveAs the default keyboard to a different name;
2. Make the mapping modifications;
3. Save the modifications; and
4. When I need one of the modified keyboards, simply LOAD it for temporary use.
So, I guess, my questions of you are as follows:
A. Is "default.xml" in fact the default keyboard?
B. And is {...}\share\config\soffice.cfg\global\accelerator\en-US
where I need to store the re-mapped keyboard for the overall suite?
C. Similarly, do I store the individualized keyboards for the different sub-apps to the suite in the respective "accelerator\en-US" folders under each sub-app?
That would seem like the thing to do -- assuming, of course, I'm in the ball park here both as to the correct file and the correct folders; but maybe you know this off the top of your head? You sound like you've done some keyboard mapping to accelerator keys before in OOo.
If I am correct, I suppose I could just tuck the
various mapped keyboards away as files named
like
Writer-Cus-Kybd-01.xml
Writer-Cus-Kybd-02.xml
Calc-Cus-Kybd-01.xml
Global-Cus-Kybd-01.xml
and so forth. What do you think?
Thanks,
Nuncus |

I haven't a clue about keyboard configurations. Until I read your post I hadn't noticed the Load and Save buttons. That I why it is only a guess what they are there for. _________________ Fonts * Opera * Oo Tips * FAQ * New Forum

Oh, well, thanks for letting me know about the existence of the OK buttons and the lower panel in the dialog box that wasn't visible on my monitor screen.
Your advice at least allowed me to solve the "immediate" problem; and I thank you very much for your time.
I'll just have to "hack" the other, I suppose.

To have two different keyboard shortcut assignments assign them to a template (that's what the load and save is about). Then the those keyboard assignments will be active when the template is active.
Caveat: I haven't experimented with this in 2.0 and have seen an issue that some people were having some problems. _________________ Cheers, Ian
