Hi

I have a document with lower case Roman numerals(i, ii, iii,...) for the frontmatter and normal Arabic numerals(1, 2, 3, ...) for the main body.

This works fine, except I dont know how to get the Rroman numerals to appear for the front pages in the table of contents at the same time as having the Arabic numerals for the main body.

Thanks
Nick

The relatively simple answer is that you do it using page styles.

I assume that you have two page styles set up for the front matter and the main body. Double click on the frontmatter style in the Stylist, select modify and on the Page tab select Roman numerals for the format.

This now sets the page number field to Roman numeral format and the main body remains as Arabic. When you produce a ToC the Frontmatter headings are in Roman and the main are in Arabic

I didn't do anything special. If you have two numbering schemes in your document then you should have two numbering schemes in the TOC

Insert, Manual break where the new section begins, restart the page numbering, and change the numbering style.

Tools, Outline numbering to define which paragraph styles to include in the outline

Edit the Index, Create from outline, to define which paragraph styles to include in the TOC.

Entries, Levels, 1,2,3 etc., to define which levels need numbers. I have four levels of headings, but include only three in the TOC, with only the third one numbered. Since the Preface (on page ii) is level two, it is not currently numbered, but if I change it to be numered, the correct roman nuemral is shown.

Level 1: Vagga (Entry only)
Level 2: Chapter (Entry only)
Level 3: Verse Heading (Entry, Tab, Page Number)
Level 4: Verse (not included in the TOC)
