| In Microsoft Word, I'm accustomed to selecting a rectangular area of text by holding the alt key and dragging. Is there a way to do this in open office? |

No.
You can get the same results with somewhat more difficulty.
You can enter additional selection mode by pressing Shfit-F8 or by clicking on the fith small panel on the status bar on the bottom of an OpenOffice.org window (which normally normally displays "STD") until it displays "ADD".
You can now use regular highligtiing methods on portions of text indvidually in separate lines of text to select the rectangle that you want, building the rectangle selection by selection, line by line.
If your purpose in doing this is to change the appearance of that block of text, this works fine.
If you want to copy and paste, unfortunately, after copying, the individual line selections will be pasted as a single concatenated line which you will have to break into separate lines manually.
Other workarounds are discussed at http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=30987&highlight=selection |
