Hello - I am a brand new open office forum user. I have version 1.0 on a different computer and have just downloaded 2.0 on this one. I noticed that the file sizes are quite different....is this due to the fact that one is zipped and one unzipped? What are the main differences between the old and the new?
Thanks.

Both files are zipped. The new OpenDocuemnt format does store more information in the file, it includes a thumbnail for instance.
Some differences:
PDF support from 1.1.x onwards
OpenDocument from 1.1.5 onwards
Base
Revised interface
Better foreign file format support
More languages
May be quicker
Better word count
lots of other stuff I can't rememeber right now _________________ Arch Linux

This is really helpful; the real problem that I am having is that I am attending CSU-Pueblo getting a Music ED k-12 degree and the university has 2002 Microsoft Office Word. When I try to format in Microsoft Works (which came on this computer) the formatting is not quite the same. Neither are all the formatting styles and features of OpenOffice supported. I was ready to turn a paper and my name got erased, page numbers were missing, and the title which was double spaced turned out single spaced when it was opened at school. This particular course is an online course, so everything is turned in electronically....how can I be sure of what my document will look like? (or at least make it acceptable!) If anyone knows, that would be great!
By the way, Open Office is much more intuitative for me than either of the Microsoft programs; Works has some cool things, but I like OOo much better!

I've never tried it but what about Microsoft's viewer?
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=95e24c87-8732-48d5-8689-ab826e7b8fdf&DisplayLang=en
This should allow you to see what you are producing if you have to submit in Word format.
Another and probably better option if you can get the Univ to go for it is to export the documents in PDF ( use the File>Export as PDF- it seems to work a bit better than the menu icon). _________________ jrkrideau

I downloaded the viewer as you recommended....I submitted my paper as a PDF. There is a good converter at www.cutepdf.com that installs as a printer and leaves no marks on documents. I use it for Finale and Encore files to send to other musicians. Don't know if it does graphics, but it is free!

If you want PDF, then check under the File Menu on your new OpenOffice.org installation in all modules and you will discover "Export as Pdf".
Of course free utilities like cutepdf and PrimoPDF are very useful for work done outside of OpenOffice.org |
