Okay, here's the issue: When I build a custom paragraph style for my document, everything saves except the automatic indents. I check the box, click Ok, write my piece, and then save it; when I, or anyone else opens the document in Open Office or MSWord, there are no indents. Everything else about my custom style saves properly.

Is this a flaw in the program, or am I doing something wrong? If the fault is mine, then I have to say this feature isn't very intuitive and should be corrected. Simply checking the box should save the formatting as you set it up, right?

Anyway, let me know. Thanks.

Kevin

I didn't check your problem.

Can't you use the indent specification sizes (before text, first line), instead of using the automatic indents ?

Did you type in the indents you want, or only click the "automatic" box?

I just clicked the automatic box. Why would you type them in if the automatic box does it for you?

I confirm the problem (when exporting to Word).
Maybe Word does not support this feature.

Nevertheless, I think you have a wider range of option, using:

What I can't replicate is the problem:
Quote:

Do you mean "after saving as DOC" ?
I don't have any problem with ODT

I've been saving as .doc and .rtf. The indents don't show up in OO Writer either, when I reload the file.

If you export to a format that doesn't support a feature, you will loose it !

Not sure, but why do you insist on using them ?

Why don't you follow my suggestion:

This works in Word Docs, for sure

Personal opinion: You do what pleases you, but I think that these "first line" indents are a bit "out of fashion" in Layout Design. I prefer to use some spacing between paragraphs, that can also be defined in Paragraph styles.

It looks to me like this is a feature that Word does not support (97, anyway). I have confirmed the behaviour as described. (As if that was really needed)

In the W97 Format Para dialog there is no setting for Automatic indentation, and no mention of it in the help that I can see (a quick look, not an exhaustive search)

+ + +
All the rest is just detail on how I confirmed the issue. Read no further unhless you're really, really bored...
OOo 2.0.1, Word 97, Win NT4

Create new document
Type a couple of paras
create new style "autoindent" with automatic indent box checked
Save as both odt and W97/XP/2003 formats
Close file

Open odt - formatting is preserved

Open doc in Writer
Writer thinks the style is "autoindent" - but the first line is not indented and the "Automatic" box for indentation is now unchecked

Open doc in Word
Word thinks it is a style called autoindent - but there is no indentation of the first line.
Format > Paragraph, set first line indent to 1.25cm (Word's default)
Close
Open in Writer
Writer sees the style "autoindent", Automatic box is unchecked, no first line indent specified.
Format > Paragraph and First Line indentation is set to 1.25cm (as per the setting made in Word).
