|
|
Yesterday, for the first time, I installed OpenOffice.org 2.0 on my Toshiba notebook, platform Windows XP. When I tried to restart, the screen got blocked on the image of Windows XP loading.
These are my circumstances:- I have a legal version Windows XP, that came together with the notebook when I bought it
- I have Service Pack 2 installed and other updates of Windows
- I don't have Office; but I have MS Works Suite 2003, which includes Word, Outlook
- Windows was configured in English
This is what I did:- Since I live in Spain, I wanted to have a Spanish version of OO.org 2.0. As there wasn't any, I downloaded, together with the OO.org 2.0, the language pack for Spanish. All from the official Spanish OO.org homepage.
- First I installed OO.org 2.0, then the Spanish language pack
- All OO.org 2.0 programs seemed to run perfectly, except for the fact that they all appeared in English
- So that's why I uninstalled and then installed again the pack several times (by the way through what seemed to be 2 different setup files: "setup" and "install" or "installer")
- Finally, I decided to restart my computer to see if this would solve things out
This is what happened:
- The initiating process gets stuck on the Windows loading screen. When I turn off and on my computer, a screen full of text appears, offering me varous options to proceed.
- After trying some that didn't work, I chose to restore Windows to the point before OO.org 2.0 was installed. At first, this did not seem te be succesful.
- Today, however, it managed to start up, having restored Windows to the earlier configuration
Now, what happened here? I'm kind of afraid of trying to install this program again. Can anybody tell me what this is all about? And if it's safe for me to install OO.org 2.0 AND the language pack again?
Thankx.

I can confirm most of this. I have been using OOo2 since release. Had 2.0.1 installed and downloaded the 2.0.2 upgrade. After installing I shut down my PC the next day (yesterday). When I went to start up my PC it just stayed at the XP loading screen.
I had to use Safe Mode to restore to my last system restore point which was immediately prior to installing 2.0.2. Once restored my PC ran fine. I have since reinstalled 2.0.1 and will hold off til next release of OOo.
I am running Windows XP Home SP2. English language.
Glad to see your post thought it was something local to my machine! _________________ Tony

After reading several posts in this forum, I have concluded that it is better to uninstall OOo 2.0.1 before installing v. 2.0.2. That is what I did, and I havenīt had any problem so far.
Also, it is a very good practice to create a restore point before installing anything. Some applications do this automatically, but others donīt. |

OK. I uninstalled OOo2.0.1 and then rebooted. Then I installed OOo2.0.2 and everything works fine.
Can't the installer let us know we should uninstall the previous version? After all the computer not booting up after installing 2.0.2 over 2.0.1 is a big bug in my mind. _________________ Tony
