Very often maybe 20% of the time, files I have created in Open Office 2.0 will not open.
They say
Read Error - error reading file.
The way around it is to open the file in Word and then save as something else - it then opens in open office 2.0.
This is happening so often it is making using Open Office a disaster.
I had few problems with open office 1 so what is happening?
I am using XP, and I save files in doc format to maintain compatibility with my work colleagues who still use Word.

I found an answer which is still annoying and I hope something can be done about it!
Ok it seems that when I save a file in openoffice (I have it set up to save as a word97 file) it does not automatically add the .doc bit at the end.
If you try and open it in Open office 2 it seems not to understand and cannot read it
it you rename it and put the .doc on it it opens ok.
Is this not daft - iff you have set microsoft word as you default format?
Why does it not add the .doc?
why does it not open a file as a .doc by default?

| Do you have "Automatic file name extension" checked on the Save As dialog? |

No I didn't - I'm sure this will help - still can't help thinking it should have known it was a Word Doc!!

Windows won't have known it because Windows only uses file extensions. On some Linux systems it may have been read correctly. File association is doen by the OS, not the software and it's something that is prone to breaking. _________________ Arch Linux
