Now that I know how to solve the 2.0.2 bug which prevents the question to update a documents styles to the ones from the external template, I want to re-assign one of my templates to a lot of chapter documents (so that I can upate the look and feel of a complete book by just chaning the template). The next time the chapter is opened it will ask me if I want to reapply the styles from the tempalte.
So, is it possible to link a template to an already existing document ? _________________ I am using Open Office 2.0.2 (English version) on Windows XP |

There may be a couple of ways to go about it; here's just one. Open each chapter document and in the Styles and Templates window, click the drop-down tool that looks like a page with a little green plus sign. There you'll find a Load Styles option--click that to open a dialog that lets you specify what template or document to load the styles from, and what kinds of styles you want. That will save the styles with the current document, so you won't need to reload them.
The only caveat I can think of with this or any other styles change is that, when styles are used across many documents, I believe you'll need to update it in each individual document when you decide to change something.
Keep in mind a master document's styles will override the individual chapters, so if you use a master document to pull together your chapters, just set its styles.
[Edit -- addendum]
But now that I've re-read your question, I wonder if you already knew the load-styles method, and I've misunderstood what you're asking. _________________ Cheers!

Yes, I am using a master document, and do know of the load styles.
That's not the problem.
The problem is that I have a lot of chapters which I, somehow, managed to created without using a template. There is a bug in 2.0.2 that prevents Writer from asking to update the styles in the document when the styles in a template has been changed.
I found a small macro to fix this problem, so I now would want to attach the template I wrote for this book to each and every chapter of the book. That way, if I decide to change something book-wide, I just need to update the template. Next time, each chapter will be opened, the question will be asked to update it's styles from the styles in the template.
That way I don't have to load the styles every time.
Thanks for answering, though. This is a touch question, so it seems. _________________ I am using Open Office 2.0.2 (English version) on Windows XP |

I don't think you can "assingn" a template to existing documents. I have seen some "work-around": creat a new document from the template, then copy the content of a existing document to it. That seems to be the only way at this point. |

| This may accomplich what you want without getting involved with a master document. Open your template and do Insert > File > some chapter. Have not tried it but I think the template styles will override the chapter styles. If so, you can just keep inserting chapters. |
