edit mode on/off on open?

my spreadsheets and forms are opeining in edit mode (by default i presume).
how can i set them to open with edit off. mostly i'm viewing data and would
prefer not to accidentally alter something. i'd rather it were a deliberate choice
that i enter this mode on these documents.

If you're using Windows, and the file has the read-only attribute set, then OOo prevents you editing the file.

but wouldn't that completely shut me out of editing the document?
i'm just looking to have the edit icon inactive when the doc opens.
these are likely docs i'll want to edit. i just don't want to acccidentally
change them.
