I want to create some sort of mindmap with an ellipse in the middle and 10 ellipses connected through a line around the central ellipse. The problem is I can only draw a line from four points of the central ellipse which makes the mindmap look strange. How can I add more points to the ellipse and how can I distribute them evenly around the edge of the ellipse?

select the elipse, click 'glue points' and add new points anywhere you wish .... or you can follow the instruction in the help doc ... the problem is finding the edit points tool bar!

The Edit Points icon allows you to activate or deactivate the edit mode for Bézier objects. In the edit mode, individual points of the drawing object can be selected.
Insert Points
Activates the insert mode. This mode allows you to insert points. You can also move points, just as in the move mode. If, however, you click at the curve between two points and move the mouse a little while holding down the mouse button you insert a new point. The point is a smooth point, and the lines to the control points are parallel and remain so when moved.
If you wish to create a corner point you must first insert either a smooth or a symmetrical point which is then converted to a corner point by using Corner Point.

Hm, that doesn't work out. I don't really want to add points to the curve/ellipse but I want to be able to connect not just from the very left/right/top/bottom point but from any other point on the ellipse. But when I select the connector-tool these four points are the only ones availible...
I hope you understand what I mean it's kind of hard to explain...

Not a trivial problem Wink

Distributing points evenly around a circle isn't so bad, but if you then distort the circle into an ellipse, especially the very elongated eillipses you typically see in a mindmap, it goes bad. The points on the sides being get squished closer together (think 'squishing' the circle vertically).

I suppose there's a mathematical way to calculate the positions, but even so, I doublt there's a reasonable way to translate that into a Draw object, short of writing a BASIC macro to do it.

Just eyeball it Wink

Freemind is quite nice, and it claims to produce OpenOffice files, but I find that the files are not usable in OOo 2.0. And, besides, it doesn't draw the map in the way that the OP described.

How about drawing a star and attaching glue points to the tips, scaling it to match the elipse, and then hiding it behind (or making it invisible), then grouping with the elipse?

I suspect that will not suffer the "grouping" effect of using bezier points on a curve.
