Hi...
First:
I was always a supporter of that and every other open source project. And still, OO is the best office Suite available.

Second:
Sorry, it is no longer funny. I am using Open office 2.0 on Win 2K since a few months now and I am running regulary into the same annoying problem when using OO Writer.
It is all the same if it is a blank document or not, everytime when the program is automatically saving the document, the whole program is crashing. Sometimes resulting in loosing the whole document.
I really like Open Office. But I am actually really afraid to use it to work on my own documents. I don't like to loose a whole projekt ( that happened a few times now).
I don't have any other Office Suite on my computer installed.
Is there a patch available or an update to solve that? That would be great.

My understanding is that the software on Windows has a repair mechanism - invoked by running a setup file. If that is not so or it does not work, I suggest uninstalling the software, renaming your user directory (or deleting it if it contains nothing you want to retrieve later), then reinstalling.

I also suggest any testing be done with an expendable document.

Are you getting the same effect with Calc or any other module?

Turn off autosave or look for where it is saving the file. Check permissions for the directory that OOo is using to autoisave files in.

Do not work upon documents that are loaded from floppy disk, copy them to the desktop first then copy them back when done.

Check Java machine, if version is less than 1.5 update 7 then update it

How much memory has your Win2K system got?

Do you have auto updates enabled/

Have you got more than 200 fontfaces installed?
