In WordPerfect, a "Reveal Codes" window can be opened. Formatting codes, e.g [Bold], [Box], [Endnote], [Font Size], [Left Indent] etc are shown in this window at the bottom of the editing screen. These codes can be removed, one by one or together in a selected bundle, at will. New codes are inserted by new formatting in the text being written or edited. This gives the user great control over his editing. For instance, if any text is copied from outside OpenOffice, from a Word document or a website, this text can be "cleaned" of unwanted formatting codes. And if any editing in WordPerfect goes awry, the user can check the formatting codes in the Reveal Codes window and make adjustments. The sequence of inserted formatting codes can also be important, and can be seen and controlled in the Reveal Codes window. My question: Does OpenOffice offer similar control over underlying formatting codes? How do I control the formatting codes in OpenOffice Writer?

There has been a very lengthy discussion of the WordPerfect-type "Reveal Codes" topic in the past, in which almost all users wanted to have it in OpenOffice. What I still do not know, is whether such a function has been added to OpenOffice. Can I see and work on the formatting codes in an OpenOffice document, or not? How do I see and work on the formatting codes, if this happens to be possible in OpenOffice? This function is the greatest advantage of WordPerfect over OpenOffice (and over MS Word as well). Thanks for the help so far!

Word is that this feature will NOT be implemented, because Word Perfect is a character based program, whereas OOo is style-based.

There, however, is a macros written by someone (I forget who). It's very rudimentary and does not work like Word Pefect does. It will show you the codes on the line you position the cursor on,but it won't let you make edits.

memyselfi is right I think. Here are some informations from the links given in the other thread. This is a message from Ian Laurenson, whom memyselfi is talking about :

Quote:
I am writing an open source "reveal codes" macro for Writer. I have posted two
versions for discussion on my OOo web page:
http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/hillview/OOo/
I have started a discussion thread about it in the Writer forum:
http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=36976

I would really like some feedback on this, otherwise I will simply drop it as
not being of interest to anyone. If what I have done is hopeless I would like to
know that too so that I don't waste any more time on it.

Cheers, Ian Laurenson
