This was edited because the requirements have changed.
I am trying to:
1. scale a 5.5 x 8.5 in document up to print on a Letter size sheet
AND
2. print two 5.5 x 8.5 in pages side by side onto a letter size sheet lengthwise

What was the method with MS Word ? Reworking the doc ?

Someone told me some time ago that there was a function like 'fit to page' to do such a thing but I've never seen that in MS Word.

Eventually, I think you have to rework the doc.

Answers like that kill a topic.

I am sorry my original line of thinking was incorrect...
The original formatting of the page is for 5.5 x 8.5 and I want to scale it up to fit 8.5 x 11. I would need one copy where each 5.5 page is scaled up and printed to an 8.5 page. I would need another copy where two 5.5 pages are printed side-by-side along the length of an 8.5 sheet.

The process for scaling up a 5.5 x 8.5 page to print on a Letter size sheet in Word goes like this:
1. Click File > Print
2. Change Scale to Paper Size to Letter
3. Click Print

The process for printing two 5.5 x 8.5 pages on a Letter size sheet lengthwise in Word goes like this:
1. Open the document
2. Go to File > Page Setup > Margins Tab
3. Write down the margin measurements
4. Click Paper Size Tab
5. Change paper size from 5.5 x 8.5 to Letter
6. Change orientation to Landscape
6. Go back to Margins and type in values as they were previously
7. Check box for "2 pages per sheet"
8. Close Page Setup
9. Click File > Print then Print.

For the scaling, I fear there is no such option in OOo.

To print 2 pages on 1, you can use the Preview print options. But you have to make your document in Letter size, then copy the 1st page on 2nd page. In the preview, set paper orientation to Landscape and print (the preview) with 1 line and 2 columns, it should do it.

In OpenOffice 2.4 (as of July 2008), there is an option equivalent to Word's Scale to Fit:

Format (main menu) > Page > Sheet (tab)

At the bottom of the dialog, "Scaling Mode" option, you can select: "Fit Print Ranges to Width/Height" and the set (for example): Width=1 Page, Height=1 Page.

Finally you can verify this doing

File > Page Preview

It did the trick for me.

In Writer? You described here a Calc feature.
