I have just installed Open Office and although I can find the program using Windows Explorer under Program Files, I can not launch any of the applications because they are not to be found in the START Menu. Can any one tell me where I have gone wrong.

If I understand your question, go to Start>All Programs>Open Office and select the program you want to run.
It will then appear in the list of recently used programs below the START menu. You can then drag and drop it above the bar into your START menu.
